Lal Bahadur Shastri

  1. Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2 October 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, near Varanasi.
  2. His father died when Lal Bahadur Shastri was only about one and a half years old, after which his mother raised him and his siblings.
  3. He was deeply inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and India’s freedom struggle from a young age.
  4. At the age of 16, he left his studies to participate in the Non-Cooperation Movement.
  5. He later studied at Kashi Vidya Peeth in Varanasi, where he received the title “Shastri” after completing his studies.
  6. His early dream was to see India become free from British rule and to dedicate his life to serving the country.
  7. He joined the Indian National Congress and actively participated in the freedom movement, spending about seven years in British prisons.
  8. He married Lalita Devi in 1927.
  9. After Independence, he held several important positions, including Railway Minister, Transport and Communications Minister, Commerce and Industry Minister and Home Minister.
  10. He became the second Prime Minister of India on 9 June 1964, following Jawaharlal Nehru.
  11. During the 1965 India–Pakistan War, he gave the famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” emphasizing the importance of soldiers and farmers.
  12. He travelled to Tashkent, Soviet Union, in January 1966 to participate in peace negotiations with Pakistan.
  13. He signed the Tashkent Declaration with Pakistan’s President Ayub Khan on 10 January 1966.
  14. Lal Bahadur Shastri died in Tashkent on 11 January 1966, just one day after signing the declaration.
  15. He was 61 years old at the time of his death, and the official account attributed his death to a heart attack.

✨ Beyond the Legend: The Lesser – Known Lal Bahadur Shastri

  1. 🕊️ His original family name did not include “Shastri.” “Shastri” was an academic title he received after graduating from Kashi Vidya Peeth; he later became widely known by it.
  2. 🪢 He walked to school without shoes as a child, even during the intense summer heat, because of his family’s financial difficulties.
  3. 🎓 He left formal schooling at just 16 to join Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement.
  4. 🧵 His wedding dowry was deliberately minimal: he accepted only a spinning wheel and some hand-spun cloth.
  5. ⛓️ He spent about seven years in British prisons during the freedom struggle ; an unusually large portion of his young and middle adulthood.
  6. 🚂 He became the first Railway Minister to resign over a major railway accident, accepting moral responsibility even though the Prime Minister stated that he himself was not personally responsible for the accident.
  7. 🏛️ Before becoming Prime Minister, he held an unusually wide range of Union portfolios, including Railways, Transport & Communications, Commerce & Industry and Home Affairs.
  8. ⚙️ He was nicknamed a “little dynamo” because of his tremendous capacity for hard work, despite his quiet and unassuming personality.
  9. 🏠 His father died when he was only about 18 months old, after which his young mother moved with her three children to her father’s home.
  10. 🗳️ He played an important organisational role in the Congress party, helping strengthen its organisation during the period leading up to the 1952, 1957 and 1962 general elections.
  11. Lal Bahadur Shastri was known for his remarkable simplicity, humility and honesty, even after becoming the Prime Minister of India.
  12. He lived a simple lifestyle and avoided unnecessary luxury despite holding one of the country’s highest offices.

“Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.”

“Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (“Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer”) was a slogan coined and popularised by Lal Bahadur Shastri. He gave it in a public speech in 1965, during a period when India was facing both food shortages and a war with Pakistan.
